Sec. 1. 20-A MRSA §12723 is enacted to read:

§12723.__Start of school year

1.__Start of school year.__The colleges of the system may not commence classes earlier than Labor Day.__This subsection does not prohibit a college from:

A.__Holding athletic contests or practices prior to Labor Day;

B.__Scheduling in-service days or work days prior to Labor Day;

C.__Holding school year-round; or

D.__Holding summer school.

Sec. 2. P&SL 1865, c. 532, §7-A is enacted to read:

Sec.* 7-A.__Start of school year.__The University of Maine System may not commence classes earlier than Labor Day.__This subsection does not prohibit the University of Maine System from:

1.__Holding athletic contests or practices prior to Labor Day;

2.__Scheduling in-service days or work days prior to Labor Day;

3.__Holding school year-round; or

4.__Holding summer school.

Sec. 3. P&SL 1941, c. 37, §9 is enacted to read:

Sec.* 9.__Start of school year.__The Maine Maritime Academy may not commence classes earlier than Labor Day.__This subsection does not prohibit the Maine Maritime Academy from:

1.__Holding athletic contests or practices prior to Labor Day;

2.__Scheduling in-service days or work days prior to Labor Day;

3.__Holding school year-round; or
