| | | Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine as follows: |

| | | Sec. 1. 29-A MRSA §523, sub-§7 is enacted to read: |

| | | 7.__Exemption from fee and excise tax.__Upon application to | | the Secretary of State, a person who served in the United States | | Armed Forces and was honorably discharged may receive one set of | | registration plates under section 451 for a noncommercial vehicle | | with a lifetime exemption from the registration fee under section | | 501 and excise tax under Title 36, section 1482.__An application | | for exemption under this subsection must be accompanied by the | | applicant's Armed Forces Report of Transfer or Discharge, DD Form | | 214, or certification from the United States Veterans | | Administration or appropriate branch of the United States Armed | | Forces verifying the applicant's military service and honorable | | discharge. |

| | | Sec. 2. 36 MRSA §1483, sub-§12, as amended by PL 1995, c. 65, Pt. A, | | §138 and affected by §153 and Pt. C, §15, is further amended to | | read: |

| | | 12. Certain veterans. Automobiles owned by veterans who are | | granted free registration of such vehicles by the Secretary of | State under Title 29-A, section 523, subsection subsections 1 and | | 7; |
|
| | | This bill allows an honorably discharged veteran of the United | | States Armed Forces to receive one set of license plates for a | | noncommercial vehicle with a lifetime exemption from registration | | fees and excise taxes. |
