| | | Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine as follows: |

| | | Sec. 1. 17-A MRSA §207, sub-§§3 and 4 are enacted to read: |

| | | 3.__Notwithstanding subsection 2, an assault against a sports | | official that occurs within the confines of or immediate vicinity | | of an athletic facility at which the sports official is acting or | | was acting in that person's capacity of sports official is a | | Class C crime punishable by a fine of $10,000 and imprisonment of | | not more than 3 years. |

| | | 4.__"Sports official" means any person who participates in a | | sport in the position of coach, referee, judge, timekeeper or | | other position, including an assistant to any such person.__ | | "Sports official" does not include a person participating in the | | sport as a team member or contestant. |

| | | This bill makes assault against a sports official a Class C | | crime punishable by a fine of $10,000 and imprisonment of not | | more than 3 years. |
