2-A.__Expiration of license; nonimmigrants.__A license to operate
a motor vehicle issued to a nonimmigrant who has demonstrated
authorization to be present in the United States for a period of
time shorter than the standard period of the license pursuant to
section 1301 expires on the date of the expiration of the
acceptable form of documentation provided at the time of
application or, if there is no definite end to the period of
authorized stay, after a period of 2 years.

 
Sec. 8. 29-A MRSA §1406, sub-§8 is enacted to read:

 
8. Fee; license issued to nonimmigrant.__The fee for a
driver's license issued to a nonimmigrant with an expiration date
fixed by the Secretary of State is $5 for a license issued for
less than one year, $10 for a license issued for one to 2 years,
$15 for a license issued for 2 to 3 years, $21 for a license
issued for 3 to 4 years and $30 for a license issued for more
than 4 years.

 
Sec. 9. 29-A MRSA §1410, sub-§4, as enacted by PL 1997, c. 437, §40,
is amended to read:

 
4. Expiration. Each Except as provided in subsection 8, each
nondriver identification card issued pursuant to this section
expires 6 years from the date of issuance.

 
Sec. 10. 29-A MRSA §1410, sub-§8 is enacted to read:

 
8. Nonimmigrant nondriver identification cards; expiration.__
An applicant for a nondriver identification card who is a
nonimmigrant must present to the Secretary of State written
proof, evidence or documentation that the applicant's presence in
the United States is authorized under federal law.__A nondriver
identification card issued to a nonimmigrant who has demonstrated
authorization to be present in the United States for a period of
time shorter than the standard period of the nondriver
identification card expires on the date of the expiration of the
acceptable form of documentation provided at the time of
application or, if there is no definite end to the period of
authorized stay, after a period of 2 years.

 
SUMMARY

 
This bill requires an applicant for a driver's license or a
nondriver identification card who is a nonimmigrant to provide
the Secretary of State written proof, evidence or documentation
