An Act To Exempt Breast-feeding Mothers from Jury Duty

Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine as follows:

Sec. 1. 14 MRSA §1213, sub-§2, ¶C  is enacted to read:

C A prospective juror who is a mother who is breast-feeding a child may defer jury service upon request for up to one year and may renew that request as long as she is breast-feeding. If the request is made in writing, the penalty of perjury attaches to the request, and the presiding justice or the clerk of court acting under the supervision of the presiding justice shall grant the request without requiring the prospective juror to appear in court.

This bill allows a mother who is breast-feeding to request a deferral from jury duty as long as she is breast-feeding and does not require the mother to appear in court if the request is made in writing.
