Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine as follows:

 
Sec. 1. 23 MRSA §1351, as amended by PL 1985, c. 506, Pt. B, §19,
is further amended by adding after the 3rd paragraph a new
paragraph to read:

 
Where there is a clearly marked crosswalk not located at an
intersection, a municipality, at its own expense, may erect a
sign indicating that there is a crosswalk and that traffic
must stop when pedestrians are present on the crosswalk.__The
Department of Transportation shall adopt rules establishing
the appropriate construction, installation and dimensions of
these signs.__Rules adopted pursuant to this paragraph are
routine technical rules as defined in Title 5, chapter 375,
subchapter 2-A.

 
SUMMARY

 
This bill permits municipalities to install stop signs in
crosswalks that are not located at an intersection. The
Department of Transportation is directed to establish rules
regarding the appropriate construction, installation and
dimensions of the signs.
