The General Purpose Aid for Local Schools program within the Department of Education will require ongoing General Fund appropriations of $3,759,500 per year beginning in fiscal year 2021-22 for the cost associated with increasing the number of students that may be enrolled at virtual public charter schools authorized by the Maine Charter School Commission from 1,000 at all virtual public charter schools to 1,500 at each virtual public charter school and expanding the grade levels that a virtual public charter school may serve to include grade levels 5 and 6.  This estimate assumes a total of 500 students that are currently not attending a publicly funded school choose to attend a virtual public charter school at a cost of $7,519 per student.  The total cost may be higher or lower depending on actual experience.
