Resolve, To Expand Research To Fight Lyme Disease

Sec. 1. Joint study of effect of ticks on the deer and moose population. Resolved: That the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife and the University of Maine jointly shall study the effects of ticks and ticks infected with disease, including Lyme disease, on the deer population and the effects of winter ticks on the moose population. The department shall submit a report to the joint standing committee of the Legislature having jurisdiction over health and human services matters regarding the findings of the joint study and any necessary implementing legislation by December 8, 2019; and be it further

This resolve, for the purpose of reducing the effects of Lyme disease, does the following:

1. It requires the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife and the University of Maine to undertake a joint study into the effects of ticks and disease-infected ticks on the deer population and the effects of winter ticks on the moose population; and

2. It provides funding to the Department of Health and Human Services, Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention for the Lyme and Vector-Borne Disease Laboratory in the Maine Medical Center Research Institute and the University of Maine for research and development to combat Lyme disease.
