Amend the bill by striking out the title and substituting the following:

‘An Act To Improve Equity for Economically Disadvantaged Students Seeking To Transfer to an Approved Private School or a Public School’

Amend the bill by striking out everything after the enacting clause and before the summary and inserting the following:

Sec. 1. 20-A MRSA §15689, sub-§14  is enacted to read:

14 Adjustment for transfer of economically disadvantaged students.   The commissioner may expend and disburse funds to reimburse an economically disadvantaged family for the tuition and transportation costs associated with a child in that family attending an approved private school or a public elementary or secondary school in a school administrative unit other than the one in which the child resides pursuant to section 5203, subsection 1 and section 5204, subsection 1. For purposes of this subsection, a family is considered economically disadvantaged if a child in that family meets the definition of economically disadvantaged student pursuant to section 15672, subsection 3.

This amendment, which is the minority report of the joint standing committee, strikes and replaces the bill to authorize the Commissioner of Education to reimburse families of economically disadvantaged students for tuition and transportation costs associated with attending approved private schools or public elementary or secondary schools in school administrative units other than those units in which those families reside.
