An Act To Require High School Students To Register To Vote as a Requirement for Graduation

Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine as follows:

Sec. 1. 20-A MRSA §4730  is enacted to read:

§ 4730 Register to vote

A high school diploma may be awarded only to a secondary school student who has registered to vote in accordance with Title 21-A, section 122, unless that student is not eligible to register pursuant to Title 21-A. School guidance counselors shall certify that a student has registered to vote in accordance with this section.

This bill requires all high school students that are eligible under the laws governing elections to register to vote in accordance with the Maine Revised Statutes, Title 21-A, section 122 prior to graduation. School guidance counselors are responsible for certifying that students have registered to vote.
