An Act To Allow Smelting on Certain Brooks on Long Lake in Aroostook County

Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine as follows:

Sec. 1. 12 MRSA §12460-A, sub-§3,  as amended by PL 2007, c. 651, §12, is repealed.

Sec. 2. Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife; study. The Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife shall study the feasibility of allowing smelting on Ouellette Brook and Paulette Brook on Long Lake in Aroostook County. The department shall report its findings and recommendations to the Joint Standing Committee on Inland Fisheries and Wildlife by February 1, 2010. The Joint Standing Committee on Inland Fisheries and Wildlife may submit legislation based on the report to the Second Regular Session of the 124th Legislature.

Current law allows smelting on Mud Brook on Long Lake in Aroostook County until July 1, 2012. This bill allows smelting on Mud Brook beyond July 1, 2012. The bill also directs the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife to study the feasibility of allowing smelting on Ouellette Brook and Paulette Brook on Long Lake in Aroostook County.
