Resolve, Directing the Department of Education To Include the Study of Family and Consumer Science in the System of Learning Results

Sec. 1. Family and consumer science. Resolved: That the Department of Education shall amend the rules concerning the department’s system of learning results to add family and consumer sciences to be implemented into the curriculum that is based on the national standards of the state and national stakeholders associations of family and consumer sciences, the Maine Association of Family and Consumer Sciences and the Family and Consumer Sciences Education Division of the Association for Career and Technical Education; and be it further

Sec. 2. Curriculum requirements. Resolved: That the curriculum for family and consumer sciences must include the following:

1. Foods and nutrition, consisting of food preparation skills, food science and food safety;

2. Consumer economics and resource management, consisting of personal finance, money management and resource management; and

3. Family and human development, consisting of child development, parenting and caregiving; and be it further

Sec. 3. Seeking funds. Resolved: That the Department of Education shall seek all available funds from the Federal Government, nonprofit foundations or other appropriate public or private sources to fund the costs of developing the curriculum under section 2 and instituting it in the public schools.

SUMMARY

This resolve directs the Department of Education to amend its rules concerning the system of learning results to add family and consumer science to be implemented into the curriculum that is based on national standards in the state and local family and consumer science stakeholders groups. The curriculum must include the subjects of foods and nutrition, consumer economics and resource management and family and human development. The Department of Education shall seek all available outside funding, including grants, to incorporate the requirements of this resolve.
