The General Purpose Aid for Local Schools program within the Department of Education will require additional General Fund appropriations beginning in fiscal year 2007-08 for the cost of allowing sectarian schools to be eligible to receive prorated public funds for tuition purposes.  The Department of Education has estimated the additional total cost to be $972,666 based on the following assumptions:
Number of secondary students in sectarian schools as of 4/1/06:             1,270
Number of secondary students in sectarian schools from SAU's without a secondary school: 133
2006-07 average state tuition rate:  $         7,618
Total cost for 133 students:  $   1,013,194
% of time spent on religious instruction: 4.0%
Prorated tuition costs  $      972,666
