| Imposing a minimum sentence of 30 years, 20 of which may not be suspended for repeat offenders of the crime of gross sexual assault or sexual abuse of a minor, will complicate the processing of these cases and require an annual General Fund appropriation to the Judicial Department of $45,264 for fiscal year 2005-06 and fiscal year 2006-07. This appropriation will provide funds for additional hours for judges, clerks and court appointed attorneys. This bill creates a mandatory minimum term of imprisonment and those sentenced for this type of offense would go to a state correctional facility. Currently, the average Class A offender spends 6 years and 6 months with the Department of Corrections. This bill would increase their stay by 13 years and 6 months, costing on average an additional $449,820 per offender. The average Class B offender spends 2 years and 6 months with the Department of Corrections. This bill would increase their stay by 17 years and 6 months, costing on average an additional $583,100 per offender. | |||||||||
