An Act To Address Eating Disorders in Maine

Sec. 1. Eating disorders initiative. The Department of Health and Human Services, Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention shall begin an eating disorders initiative to provide education and assistance to residents of the State suffering from eating disorders. The initiative must be designed to reduce the prevalence and long-term emotional and medical consequences of eating disorders and increase the cost-effectiveness of appropriate treatment, public awareness and coordination of treatment resources. The department shall report to the joint standing committee of the Legislature having jurisdiction over health and human services matters by May 1, 2007 on the implementation of the eating disorders initiative.

Sec. 2. Appropriations and allocations. The following appropriations and allocations are made.

Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention

Initiative: Appropriates funds for the eating disorder initiative including $50,000 that must be used for learning collaborative costs, $28,000 for 2 Americorps volunteers and $60,000 to contract a health planner to coordinate the initiative.

SUMMARY

This bill is submitted by the Joint Standing Committee on Health and Human Services. The bill provides funding of $138,000 for an eating disorders initiative to provide education and assistance to Maine residents suffering from eating disorders. The bill requires the Department of Health and Human Services to submit a report to the joint standing committee of the Legislature having jurisdiction over health and human services matters by May 1, 2007.
