Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine as follows:

 
Sec. 1. 20-A MRSA §8204, sub-§1, ¶G, as enacted by PL 1993, c. 706, Pt.
A, §4, is amended to read:

 
G. Eight Nine members of the general public, at least 5 4
of whom must be scientists, engineers or mathematicians
employed within the business or industrial community and one
of whom must have expertise in instructional television, one
of whom must be an alumnus of the Maine School of Science
and Mathematics, appointed by the Governor, and one of whom
must be a parent of a student or graduate who graduated
within 5 years prior to appointment to the board of
trustees.__This member must be appointed by the Governor
from a list submitted by a group representing parents of
students of the Maine School of Science and Mathematics.__
All appointments are subject to review by the joint standing
committee of the Legislature having jurisdiction over
education matters and subject to confirmation by the
Legislature;

 
Sec. 2. 20-A MRSA §8204, sub-§1, ¶H, as enacted by PL 1993, c. 706, Pt.
A, §4, is repealed.

 
Sec. 3. 20-A MRSA §8204, sub-§6, as enacted by PL 1993, c. 706, Pt. A,
§4, is amended to read:

 
6. Terms. The terms of the members of the board of trustees
who are appointed by the Governor are for 4-year terms unless
otherwise designated. The terms of the 2 teachers appointed by
the Governor are staggered. Of the initial appointees, one is
appointed for a term of 2 years and one is appointed for a term
of 4 years.

 
The terms of the 8 9 members of the general public are serve 4-
year staggered terms. Of the initial appointees, 4 are appointed
for terms of 2 years and 4 for terms of 4 years. Members may be
appointed for consecutive terms.

 
SUMMARY

 
This bill restructures the Board of Trustees of the Maine
School of Science and Mathematics, changing the number of members
of the general public from 8 to 9 and removing the President of
the Maine Science and Technology Foundation as a member.
