Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine as follows:

 
Sec. 1. 19-A MRSA §4007, sub-§1, ķA-2 is enacted to read:

 
A-2.__Ordering the surrender, to the court, of the
defendant's concealed firearms permit for the duration of
the order.__Upon the request of the defendant, within 10
days after the expiration of the order, the court shall
return to the defendant the concealed firearms weapons
permit;

 
Sec. 2. Application to federal agency. The Department of Public Safety,
Bureau of State Police shall apply to the federal Bureau of
Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms for approval to establish concealed
firearms permits issued by the State pursuant to the Maine
Revised Statutes, Title 25, chapter 252 as qualifying permits for
purposes of bypassing federal background check requirements for
firearms transactions.

 
SUMMARY

 
This bill allows the court to order the surrender of a
person's concealed firearms permit if the person is subject to a
permanent protection order under the Maine Revised Statutes,
Title 19-A, section 4007. The surrender may be for the duration
of the order only, and the permit must be returned, at the
person's request, within 10 days after the expiration of the
order.

 
This bill also requires the Department of Public Safety,
Bureau of State Police to apply to the Federal Government for
approval to establish state-issued concealed firearms permits as
qualifying permits for purposes of bypassing federal background
check requirements for firearms transactions.
