| | | Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine as follows: |

| | | Sec. 1. 3 MRSA §2, as amended by PL 1999, c. 509, §§1 and 2, is | | further amended by adding at the end a new paragraph to read: |

| | | If a Legislator declines the services of the partisan staff | | offices, that Legislator is entitled to an amount that represents | | the proportionate share of the cost as budgeted for the 2 | | partisan offices for the chamber of which that Legislator is a | | member.__Money received pursuant to this paragraph must be used | | for constituent services. |

| | | Sec. 2. Effective date. This Act takes effect December 1, 2002. |

| | | This bill allows a Legislator to decline the services of | | partisan staff and receive a pro rata share of the budgeted costs | | of the partisan offices to be used directly by the Legislator for | | constituent services. The bill takes effect December 1, 2002. |
