Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine as follows:

 
Sec. 1. 17-A MRSA §207, sub-§3 is enacted to read:

 
3.__If a person commits an assault against a sports official
that occurs within the confines of or immediate vicinity of an
athletic facility at which the sports official is acting or was
acting in the capacity of a sports official, the court shall
require the person to perform 100 hours of community service
pursuant to section 1345, in addition to any other penalty
imposed by the court.__For the purposes of this subsection,
"sports official" means a person who participates in a sport in
the position of umpire, coach, referee, judge, timekeeper or
other position, including an assistant to any such person.__
"Sports official" does not include a person participating in the
sport as a team member or contestant.

 
SUMMARY

 
This bill requires a person who assaults a sports official to
perform 100 hours of community service in addition to any other
penalty imposed by the court.
