Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine as follows:

 
Sec. 1. 20-A MRSA §4722-A is enacted to read:

 
§4722-A.__High school diploma standards for World War II veterans

 
Notwithstanding section 4722, a secondary school may award a
high school diploma to a person who is a resident of a
municipality served by that secondary school or who attended that
secondary school if that person:

 
1.__Started secondary school.__Started secondary school
between 1937 and 1946;

 
2.__Served in Armed Forces.__Left secondary school to serve in
the Armed Forces of the United States between September 16, 1940
and December 31, 1946;

 
3.__Did not receive high school diploma.__Did not receive a
high school diploma as a consequence of service in the Armed
Forces of the United States; and

 
4.__Honorably discharged.__Received an honorable discharge
from the Armed Forces of the United States.

 
A secondary school may award a high school diploma
posthumously.

 
SUMMARY

 
This bill permits a secondary school to award a diploma to a
person who started secondary school between 1937 and 1946, left
secondary school to serve in the Armed Forces of the United
States, did not receive a diploma as a consequence of this
service and received an honorable discharge.
