Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine as follows:

 
Sec. 1. 29-A MRSA §510, sub-§1-A is enacted to read:

 
1-A.__Motor vehicles used for farming.__Registration or a
license is not required for a motor vehicle used solely for
farming purposes when the motor vehicle:

 
A.__Is operated to or from:

 
(1)__The premises where kept;

 
(2)__A farm lot and between farm lots, when used for
farming purposes by the owner of the motor vehicle; or

 
(3)__A filling station or garage for fuel or repairs;

 
B.__Is not operated in excess of 35 miles per hour or on a
road where the posted speed limit exceeds 45 miles per hour;

 
C.__Is operated within 5 miles of a boundary of the farm
where the motor vehicle is customarily kept; and

 
D.__Is operated on a public way only during daytime hours
from May 1st to October 31st.

 
A motor vehicle exempt under this subsection is not subject to
the provisions of chapter 15.

 
SUMMARY

 
This bill exempts from registration motor vehicles used solely
for farming purposes that are operated to or from the premises
where the motor vehicle is kept, a farm lot and between farm lots
or a filling station or garage for fuel or repairs. The motor
vehicle may not be operated in excess of 35 miles per hour, on a
road with a posted speed limit of over 45 miles per hour or
further than 5 miles from the main entrance of the farm. The
motor vehicle does not need to meet the inspection standards for
registered vehicles. The motor vehicle may be operated on a
public way only during daytime hours from May 1st to October
31st.
