| | | Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine as follows: |

| | | Sec. 1. 29-A MRSA §406, first ¶, as enacted by PL 1993, c. 683, Pt. A, | | §2 and affected by Pt. B, §5, is amended to read: |

| | | A vehicle registration expires on the transfer of ownership | | except for a transfer to a surviving spouse or to a person whose | | name currently appears on the certificate of registration. |

| | | Currently, if a motor vehicle registration certificate | | contains the names of more than one person and the vehicle is | | transferred to one of the people named on the certificate, it is | | considered a new registration and the person is required to pay a | | new registration fee and sales tax unless the transfer is to a | | surviving spouse or due to marriage or a court order. |
|
| | | This bill allows the transfer to a person whose name appears | | on the registration certificate without it being considered a new | | registration, thus exempting the person from having to pay sales | | tax. |
