| | | Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine as follows: |

| | | Sec. 1. Appropriation. The following funds are appropriated from the | | General Fund to carry out the purposes of this Act. |

| | | Provides funds for the special educational | | adjustment as defined in the Maine Revised | | Statutes, Title 20-A, section 15612, | | subsection 6. Notwithstanding Title 20-A, | | section 15612, subsection 6, paragraph B or | | any other provision of law, funds for the | | adjustment must carry from year to year to be | | expended only for that purpose. |

| | | Maine statutes currently allow an adjustment in a school | | administrative unit's school subsidy amount if a school can | | demonstrate that the unexpected placement of a special education | | student will cause a budgetary hardship. Funds for these | | hardship grants are limited to amounts appropriated by the | | Legislature and no funds have been appropriated for several | | years. This bill provides a General Fund appropriation of | | $500,000 to the Department of Education to fund these special | | educational adjustments. |
