Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine as follows:

 
Sec. 1. 4 MRSA §110, as amended by PL 1983, c. 688, §3, is further
amended to read:

 
§110. Trial terms

 
The Chief Justice of the Superior Court shall establish the
times and places for holding court, shall schedule the business
to be conducted and shall specify when the grand jury shall be is
summoned. A grand jury may be specially summoned at any time by
order of a Justice of the Superior Court. The Chief Justice of
the Superior Court shall specially summon a grand jury upon
receiving a petition requesting a grand jury signed by not less
than 10% of the citizens of a county.__As used in this section,
"citizen" means a citizen of the United States and resident of
the county who is at least 18 years of age.

 
SUMMARY

 
This bill permits citizens of a county to petition for a grand
jury and requires the Chief Justice of the Superior Court to
summon a grand jury upon receipt of a petition signed by at least
10% of a county's adult, resident citizens.
