| Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine as follows: |

| | Sec. 1. 29-A MRSA §1751, sub-§1, as enacted by PL 1993, c. 683, Pt. A, | §2 and affected by Pt. B, §5, is amended to read: |
|
| | 1. Inspection required. Except as provided in this chapter | or section 2307, subsection 1, a motor vehicle required to be | registered in this State must have an annual inspection. A | person may have a motor vehicle inspected more frequently. A | certificate of inspection is issued one time each year and | expires as provided in subsection 1-A. |
|
| | Sec. 2. 29-A MRSA §1751, sub-§§1-A and 1-B are enacted to read: |
|
| | 1-A.__Expiration of certificate.__A certificate of inspection | issued for a motor vehicle registered pursuant to section 351 | expires at the end of the month in which the registration | expires.__If the registration expires at the end of the month of | issuance of the certificate of inspection, the certificate of | inspection expires at the end of the month one year from the | month of issuance, except as provided in sections 1754 and 2307. |

| A certificate of inspection for a motor vehicle issued a limited | or temporary registration pursuant to section 501 or exempt from | registration pursuant to section 510 expires at the end of the | month one year from the month of issuance. |

| | 1-B.__Transition period.__Certificates of inspection and | inspection stickers issued in accordance with section 1758 and | unexpired on January 1, 2000 are valid until the vehicle is | reregistered in accordance with section 405.__In 2000, within 30 | days of reregistration of a motor vehicle, the owner must have | the vehicle inspected.__Upon passing inspection, the inspector | shall issue a certificate of inspection or an inspection sticker | that expires at the end of the month in which the registration | expires. |

| | Sec. 3. Effective date. This Act takes effect January 1, 2000. |
|
| | This bill provides for certificates of inspection to expire at | the end of the month in which the registration expires. |
