Sec. 1. 30-A MRSA §3703 is enacted to read:

§3703.__Municipal management of bad checks

All municipalities shall compile and retain all returned checks used for the payment of fishing and hunting licenses and automobile registrations.__A person who issues a bad check must be notified in writing of insufficient funds.__The notice must be in substantially the following form.

"Your check, draft or order made payable to ............ in the amount of ......... has not been accepted for payment by ................., which is the drawee bank designated on your check.__The check is dated .................. and is numbered .......

You are CAUTIONED that unless you pay the amount of this check within 30 days after the date this letter is postmarked your hunting or fishing license or automobile registration will be revoked.

You are advised to make payment to .................. at the following address ......................."

If payment is not received after 30 days, the municipality shall notify the appropriate licensing authority, and that authority shall revoke the license or registration.

SUMMARY

This bill directs municipalities to notify all persons issuing bad checks for hunting or fishing licenses or automobile registrations that the license or registration will be revoked unless payment is made within 30 days on the insufficient funds.
